HBN Library to support Libraries Week

Monday, 23 September 2019 17:05

The Henry Bloom Noble (HBN) Library will be supporting Libraries Week, October 7 – 12, a UK-wide week-long celebration which, this year, highlights the various ways libraries can help people of all ages through digital support, services and activities.

As part of the celebrations HBN Library is inviting people looking to get the most out of their devices to come to a Barclays Digital Eagles Tea and Teach session on Wednesday October 9 from 11am to 1pm. No booking is necessary and free tea and coffee will be provided.

Barclays Digital Eagles also host Tea and Teach sessions at the library on the first Wednesday of every month between 10am and 12noon.

Borough Librarian Jan Macartney said: ‘Joining the library is free for all Island residents by either visiting the library during opening hours or from home 24/7 via our website. As people are increasingly reading and listening to books on their mobile phone or tablet, we’re proud to say HBN Library is keeping up with the trends with an ever-growing digital offer. We’re thrilled to see download figures continually on the up! During Libraries Week we’ll be going out in to the community to promote and demonstrate how easy it is to access our virtual library.’

HBN Library’s digital offer includes free access to thousands of eBooks and audiobooks via Libraries Week sponsors Rakuten OverDrive, accessible via douglaslibrary.im or the Libby app. Readers can select from subjects ranging from bestsellers, mystery, romance to thriller, biographies, history, travel and more. There are also two special collections of children’s and young adult eBooks. Users can also listen to audiobooks, the fastest-growing segment of the publishing industry with the convenience of listening on the go. Readers can browse HBN Library’s digital collection, instantly borrow titles and start reading or listening for free with a valid library card. The service is compatible with all major computers and devices, iPhone®, iPad®, Android™ phones and tablets and Chromebook™.

More than 60 eMagazines including Closer, TV Times, Woman, Heat, Hello!, BBC Good Food, MCN, BBC Gardeners’ World and Webuser are also available via the website or the RBdigital app, the world's largest newsstand for anytime, anywhere reading on desktops, mobile devices, and apps.

HBN Library's collection of popular digital magazines includes both new and backlist titles with no holds, no checkout periods, and no limits.

HBN Library offers free access to Encyclopaedia Britannica which allows you to explore the fact-checked online encyclopaedia with hundreds of thousands of objective articles, biographies, videos, and images. Also available is Oxford Reference, the premier online reference product, spanning 25 different subject areas and bringing together two million digitised entries across Oxford University Press's dictionaries and encyclopaedias.

In addition, access to Ancestry is available for free on the library’s PCs giving access to Census Records 1851 – 1901 and Civil Registration Indexes.
