'Sounds' like a great afternoon out: Open mic sessions at Noble's Park Fun Day

Thursday, 25 July 2019 20:04

On Saturday August 3 musicians and singers will have a rare opportunity to take to the stage and take part in a charity open mic like no other, one that promises performers ‘a unique experience’, says organiser, celebrated fundraiser and member of Hospice Isle of Man’s nursing team, Eugene Wilson.

Eugene will be acting as organiser and MC for the open mic sessions, which are part of the entertainment lined up for Douglas Borough Council’s Fun Day in Noble’s Park.

He has been running open mics for more than 10 years and raising funds for the blood cancer research charity Anthony Nolan since 2005 when he lost his daughter Lisa to leukaemia. He has taken part in 13 marathons, 12 in London, the other in New York, trekked the Great Wall of China and made it to Peel in the Parish Walk. To date he has raised more than £50,000.

Looking ahead to the Fun Day he said: ‘It’ll be a unique experience as it’s an opportunity for people to perform in a very different and much larger setting than where we usually hold open mics.

‘I’d encourage all those guitarists and singers who might normally confine performing to their bedroom to book a slot for the Fun Day and encourage their friends and family to come along, too, and cheer them on. Taking part in this open mic session will be a great way to boost your self-confidence, reach out to a wider audience and help to support a charity that’s doing pioneering research into blood cancer and blood disorders.

‘I always say that for me open mic musicians are like my second family. There’s a strong following in the Island and some great talent. I’ve already had people contact me to book their slot so I’d urge anyone interested to contact me as soon as possible.

‘At the Noble’s Park Fun Day open mic it’s going to be all “win-win”. You’ll get to play in front of a large audience, listen to some great music and help to raise funds for Anthony Nolan. I can’t think of a better way to spend an afternoon.’

To book an open mic slot, call Eugene Wilson on 222261. (The sessions are expected to start around 1.30pm).

Sponsored by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company and supported by 3FM, Noble’s Park Fun Day is on Saturday August 3 from 1 to 5pm.
