53,318 horse tram passengers in 2012

Although this was five per cent fewer than the previous year, the 2011 season operated for an extra week for the Commonwealth Youth Games.

Pittsphp7V647cAMRegeneration and community advisory committee lead member Councillor Stephen Pitts (pictured, left) said: ‘Given the appalling weather this summer and the continuing economic downturn the figures might be anticipated, although they are roughly on a par with those for 2010 when the service operated for the traditional 18-week period. It is encouraging, however, that passenger numbers for September, at 6820, were up 22 per cent on 2011 and cruise and coach tour visitors made a welcome contribution this year. We take comfort, though, that judging from the response to the horse tram exhibition and the appeal to vintage transport enthusiasts and specialist publications, not to mention the BBC, the service still holds a special place in people’s hearts.’

Meanwhile, preparations are under way for the Santa tram service which will operate on Saturday December 15 and Sunday December 16, departing from the Strathallan terminus at 10am, 10.40am, 11.20am, 1pm, 1.40pm, 2.20pm, 3pm and 3.40pm. The ticket price remains at £7.50 for adults and children, including refreshments, a visit to Santa’s grotto and a gift. (Children under two accompanied by an adult travel for free).
