‘Snow’ is forecast on the evening of Thursday November 21st when the Christmas  lights are switched on at 7pm outside Douglas town hall by Her Worship the Mayor of Douglas Councillor Carol Malarkey JP.

TownHallTreeDSC 9879 MediumSponsored by Celton Manx and with support from 3FM the dazzling display will be the high point in the proceedings that begin at 6.15pm with local singer Rebecca Forrest performing a selection of suitably seasonal numbers before Douglas Town Band plays carols at 6.30pm followed, at 6.45pm, by the cast of Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood giving the crowds a sneak preview of this year’s pantomime at the Gaiety Theatre.

In addition, Santa will be in his grotto in the Ridgeway Street garden area from 6.30pm.

Douglas Borough Council’s champion of community events Councillor John Faragher said: ‘The switch-on ceremony traditionally marks the “official” start of Christmas in the capital and is one of the Council’s most eagerly anticipated community events, made all the more spectacular thanks to generous sponsorship from Celton Manx and support from 3FM. It is also an occasion that helps support local traders by attracting many shoppers to the town eager to take advantage of the start of pre-Christmas Thursday late-night shopping evenings.’

Motorists are advised that the section of Ridgeway Street and King Street between Lord Street and Victoria Street and Prospect Hill from Ridgeway Street and Athol Street between 6 and 10pm will be closed to traffic on Thursday November 21st and parking will be suspended on the east side of Ridgeway Street between Lord Street and Athol Street from 12 noon until 10pm.

This annual event is always well attended and for safety reasons the Council may have to restrict numbers.

Motorists will benefit from some Christmas cheer with free parking on Loch Promenade walkway from 9.30am to 9pm every day from Thursday November 21st to January 5th 2014 (parking not permitted in this area between the hours of 9.00pm and 9.30am) and also free parking in Douglas Borough Council’s Shaw’s Brow and Bottleneck car parks from 5 to 10pm on pre-Christmas Thursdays from November 21st and all day Saturday and Sunday until December 24th.
