The Council is looking for a highly motivated lawyer to join us to work on a variety of projects and areas of legal work. This is a new and stimulating position and an opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated lawyer to join Douglas Borough Council in a role in which you will be able to strengthen and develop your existing skills, whilst sometimes working with outside advocates.

 

The range of legal work we can offer is exciting, from supporting housing, planning and service contracts with the provision of comprehensive legal advice and guidance to taking the lead on litigation matters. This position also offers a career opportunity with a diverse and challenging workload. The successful candidate will be expected to provide advice in a political environment, work collaboratively with Members and Senior Officers, and very closely with the Chief Executive and the Corporate Management Team.

 

You must be a qualified advocate, barrister or solicitor with excellent communication, organisational, research and analytical skills.  Knowledge of local government is not absolutely necessary. Flexibility and a positive approach are essential.

The Council offers a defined benefit pension scheme with a contribution of 6.8% - 7.2% (depending on salary spinal column point).

Assist and support the Community & Enforcement Manager with the provision of the effective application and enforcement of statutory provisions, byelaws, regulations, orders and other legislation within the scope of the local authority with the purpose of providing a reassuring uniformed presence, improved community safety, deterring anti-social behaviour, fostering civic pride and improving the street environment. Supervise the Borough Wardens. 

 

Assist and support the Community & Enforcement Manager with the Council’s off-street car parks. Provide cover in the absence of the Community & Enforcement Manager.

Assist the Electrical Services Manager with the provision of an efficient and effective technical and administrative support service on a daily basis and act as a first point of contact for all incoming communication to the Electrical Services Section. Prepare Capital Schemes and Revenue Budget Management Accounts and Records. Ensure computer based records are maintained accurately.

 

Be actively involved with the development and improvements of the Section’s working systems. Contribute to the successful performance of the Electrical Services Team and the Environment & Regeneration Department.

Work as part of the Housing Customer Services Team delivering a customer-focused front line service to customers of Douglas Borough Council Housing. Assist with enquiries relating to tenancy related issues, rental payments and repair requests.  Maintain accurate records and provide statistical information as required.  Provide administrative support and assistance to the housing officers and ensure the smooth running of the area office.

Undertake as a member of a Team, duties connected with the removal of household, industrial and commercial refuse and recycling from a variety of locations within and outside of the Borough of Douglas, (for example, houses, shops, schools). This will involve the use of a full range of refuse and recycling containers (for example, wheeled bins and plastic sacks, when required).

 

Ensure all areas allocated are cleaned to the standard as specified by the AWSM (R&R) providing an efficient and effective refuse collection, recycling and litter bin service throughout the Borough.
