Douglas to support 'Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth 2015'

The Borough of Douglas will be among communities across the Commonwealth supporting ‘Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth 2015’ on Monday March 9th, Commonwealth Day, when at 10am His Worship the Mayor of Douglas, Councillor Stan Cain JP, will raise the Commonwealth flag in the garden adjacent to Douglas Town Hall at the corner of Lower Ridgeway Street and Lord Street.

His Worship, who will be joined by Members of the Council and senior officers, will then read the Commonwealth affirmation which begins: ‘Joining together as members of one worldwide Commonwealth community and valuing the personal dignity and worth of every citizen, we raise this flag as a symbol of the ties of kinship and affinity we cherish.’

The 2015 tribute builds on the success of the inaugural event in 2014 and will see more than 650 Commonwealth flags raised in 38 Commonwealth countries.

 

Among Commonwealth communities with which Douglas will be joining are those in the Antarctic Peninsula, Belize, Jamaica, Malta, Mauritius, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Tonga and Tristan Da Cunha, as well as in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
