Waste Services is a function of the Environment and Regeneration department and is responsible for domestic and commercial refuse collection – including kerbside recycling collection – and general street cleaning throughout the Borough of Douglas.
Douglas Refuse Collection (households)Update - 7 January 2021
Household waste collections will continue as normal.
We ask that in circumstances where a member of the household has tested positive, is symptomatic or awaiting test results for Covid, their personal waste is double bagged and kept separate for 48 hours before placing in the refuse bin.
Finally, our crews would be grateful if you would please sanitise your wheelie bin handle, after placing out for collection.

Waste advice for those households that have tested positive or are symptomatic and awaiting test results for COVID-19
Personal waste (such as used tissues) and disposable cleaning cloths can be stored securely within disposable rubbish bags. These bags should be placed into another bag, tied securely and kept separate from other waste. This should be put aside for at least 48 hours before being put in your usual external household waste bin.
Other household waste can be disposed of as normal.
Refuse Collection
Please ensure wheeled bins have their lids closed and are placed accessibly outside the property before 6am on the day of collection.
Bulk Waste Removal
For any bulky or inappropriate for domestic disposal waste, please take it to the Eastern Household Amenity Site located at Middle River Industrial Estate, Pulrose Road, Douglas. Alternatively contact the Waste Services team, 696445 to organise a quote.

Street Cleaning
Street cleaning is undertaken 364 days a year and includes litter clearing, chewing gum removal and the emptying of litter and dog waste bins. To arrange for replenishment of the free dog waste bags at stations around Douglas, please contact the Waste Services team, 696445.
Bank Holiday Refuse Collections for 2020
Please find below the day for the wheelie bin refuse collection for this year’s Bank Holidays.
Make sure that your wheelie bin is out ready for collection on the night before
Monday 31 August (Summer Bank Holiday) - collection will be on Saturday 29 August
Friday 25 December (Christmas Day) – collection will be on Saturday 26 December
Monday 28 December (Boxing Day - collection will be on Monday as usual
Friday 1 January 2021 (New Year Day) – collection will be on Saturday 2 January 2021

Frequently Asked Questions
What is considered to be ‘unsuitable’ waste for domestic disposal?
Building waste (bricks, rubble, timber, paint tins, etc.), hazardous waste (such as syringes and certain types of clinical waste) and side waste (placed outside or alongside main bin) are considered to be unacceptable for domestic disposal. If you are unsure about what qualifies, please contact Waste Services. (See 'Contact Details' opposite).
Does the Council provide a commercial waste disposal service?
Yes, commercial refuse collection is offered at competitive rates. Waste bins are charged by weight. For more information please contact Waste Services. (See 'Contact Details' opposite).
When is the Eastern Household Amenity site open?
Between April 1st and September 30th, the site is open Monday to Saturday from 08:00-18:00 and from 08:00-16:00 on Sundays and bank holidays. Between October 1st and March 31st, the site is open from 08:00-16:00 all week.
Note - last entry into the site is 15 minutes before closing time.
The site is closed on New year's Day, Good Friday, Tynwald Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
I don’t live in the Douglas area, can I still use the site?
Yes. All users must pay a charge to dispose of fridges and freezers. Charges are:
- Under-counter fridge up to 50kg - £15.00
- Chest fridge/freezer up to 100kg - £27.00
- American style fridge 150kg+ - £50.00
- PC monitors and laptops £6.00
- TVs per unit £12.00
- Dehumidifiers £15.00
Additionally the 2.2m height restriction barrier is removed on Wednesdays from 2 to 6.45pm during the summer operating season, April 1st to September 30th.
An on-site debit card payment facility is available
Cash and cheques will not be accepted at the site.
